Gerhard Schroeder’s MV Love – Private Relationship Pictures

Schwerin. The press has questions about the climate protection basis of the gas lobby member and former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder – and Nord Stream 2 immediately sends the request to the Schwerin State Chancellery. The January 21, 2021 mail, part of a roughly 1,000-page file released under the Freedom of Information Act, documents the close relationships between Nord Stream 2 and the state government.

Gazprom of the State Chancellery informed that Schroeder would not comment on the order, thus setting the course for dealing with the inconvenient order from Spiegel. Questions about the circumstances of the foundation’s creation and Nord Stream 2’s impact on the charter remain unanswered.

Schroeder was always on hand on Nord Stream

Schroeder has rarely been seen so tight-lipped and buttoned up in the MV. When it came to gas pipelines and Nord Stream, the former consultant was there – whether in Schwerin, Lubmin or in Rostock. A proper grace period after getting out of politics to work? Nobody. Only two weeks after leaving the post of head of government in November 2005, Schroeder became chairman of the supervisory board of the pipeline operator “NEPG Company”, which later became Nord Stream AG, at the suggestion of the Russian side.

On September 4, 2006, Schroeder and company president Matthias Warnig, a close confidant of Putin and former Stasi man, announced an ambitious schedule in front of Lubmin’s first building sign: construction would begin in 2008, the first gas deliveries in October 2010.

Schroeder, a former chancellor, has put himself at the service of his Russian employer – to the alarm of the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine, who fear that bypassing direct gas through the Baltic Sea and bypassing their own countries will become a pawn in the hands of Russia’s political interests.

Country MV stands behind Gerhard Schroeder

The state government, led by the Social Democrats, has been behind the economic project that the former chancellor and friend of Putin has nurtured from the start. It shows frankly. On December 21, 2009 Prime Minister Erwin Seiling proudly presented Warnig with the building permit from the Stralsund Mining Authority, an approval authority that in effect operates independently of politics.

Schroeder’s visits to the North are sometimes special, as in 2014 at the women’s volleyball match at SSC Palmberg Schwerin. Schroeder often comes as an energy lobbyist, for example on Russia Day in Rostock or for a flight visit to Lubmin. Nord Stream extends a sponsorship network across northern Germany. The pipeline builder supports Nord Stream Race, an exclusive sailing race between Russia and Germany. In a macho James Bond setting, Schroeder gives the go-ahead for the race at Kiel in 2019, which also runs along the MV Coast.

The Usedom music festival, whose “Baltic Philharmonic” orchestra has been generously funded by Nord Stream since 2008, has repeatedly become a front and meeting place for politics and business – most recently on September 13, 2020, when Schwezeig gathered with Schroeder and his wife Schroeder for a concert.

The connection remains close – until the outbreak of war. Then the tone changed: on February 26, Schweizeg called on the former adviser via Twitter to end his participation in Russian energy companies. Since then, the state government has been working on a tough cut as it gnaws at Sellering, who is now president of the Climate Foundation.

The head of the controversial Climate Foundation, former Prime Minister Erwin Seiling, will provide a legal opinion on April 22. He says dissolution of the foundation is not legally possible.

The final cut is more difficult for him. He has verbally distanced himself from Putin, but to this day has resisted dissolving the foundation created specifically to complete Nord Stream 2.
