In addition, the vocational training or study course is funded by the German Armed Forces’ Professional Advancement Service. “I would definitely take advantage of this, even if I definitely found a job as a radar expert in the civilian economy.”

In contrast, no Social Security contributions are deducted from Marines, and only income tax is deducted from gross pay. However, the soldier pays for it himself in the form of mandatory nursing care insurance, and this has the following effect on the basis of Captain Loblo’s pay slip. Gross basic salary 3200 euros per month, for service on board the ship there are allowances of 400 euros, which the captain of the boat does not receive on land. The net result is around 2,900 euros.

Surcharges for days at sea and overseas appointments

For days at sea, a total surcharge of €90 per day can be added, unless you prefer to vacation for this. In the case of the foreign assignment, there will also be an additional fee for the foreign mission per day, which is based on the level of risk in the respective assignment country. Anyone who is unsure if working life on a ship is a thing for them can get a taste of the Navy’s seven to 23 months volunteer military service or an apprenticeship with us.”

There are many opportunities for advancement and fields of activity in the Navy. Lobloo’s career as a corporal began with the boat, then moved on from the first boat to the first boat. He can now target the staff boat, and then the senior staff boat. Not only does the fit and the corresponding function matter, but last but not least the years of service.

Clear Advantage in the Navy: Retire at 55

After 16 years working as a corporal with a porter, you can become a staff boatman. It takes 19 years to become a senior member of the boat. Loblow reveals that this promotion will be financially significant. An obvious advantage to being in the Navy: Anyone who has attained the rank of professional soldier can currently retire at age 55 and receive their pension.
