As an explorer in Mainz 05, Michael Thorke travels a lot. However, he does not miss the neighborhood duel against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Michael Thorke has scored 18 of the 22 Bundesliga goals in 45 first-class matches for Mainz 05. Eintracht, who the Frankfurt national joined in 2006, has scored four goals in 36 matches. In the second division, Thurk has 251 matches and 96 goals with Mainz and FC Augsburg. The 45-year-old has been working as a scout in Rheinhessen for the past two years. Thurk once managed to score a double against their coach Bo Svensson in their only match against each other. When Mainz beat Mönchengladbach 3-0 in the 25th round of 2005/06, he was not completely uninvolved in the fact that Borussia central defender Svensson was awarded the fifth degree.

Mr. Thork, will you be on the field on Saturday?

It seems like, first I will watch my son, who also has a match, and then I want to go to the Rhine-Main-Derby.

How old is Filius and where does he play?

He is now 14 years old and plays for Darmstadt 98.

As a Scout, you can’t watch Mainz 05 matches live, what is your specific mission in Exploration?

I am looking for players for the new season or young players who could be interesting in a few years.

“In the last two months, I’ve done 11,000 kilometers by car”

Are you still responsible for players loaned by Mainz?

I don’t have much to do with them anymore, but I do see them from time to time because I travel a lot. It is inevitable that our paths cross. In the previous season I was responsible for monitoring the loaned players.

How many kilometers does that add?

In the last two months, I’ve driven 11,000 km in the car, but that’s the same for almost everyone in the Scouts.

Have you seen Bo Svensson as a player in Mainz?

No, but I played against Poe once when he was in Gladbach. Then I moved to Eintracht in 2006, and came to Mainz in 2007.

How has your work changed since Svensson took over Mainz in January 2021?

Basically, it has changed mainly due to the new scope of missions since the beginning of this season. But from the start, Bo preferred to talk about personally loaned players rather than just read the reports, because then he has a different impression and can ask questions directly. Overall, it’s a fun and interesting collaboration.

Is Mainz 05’s style of play more reminiscent of earlier times than it was before?

Yes sure. Evolution began under Bo who was going in that direction again. However, it is not only mentality, willingness to run and aggressiveness that sets us apart, there is also good football on offer. Unfortunately, we’ve only been able to consistently translate that into scores in home games, so we’ll likely end up in 9th or 8th place. If things had gone better, more could have been achieved. We have room for improvement for the future.

“I see myself as an assistant coach or a youth coach at some point”

After your football career ended, you worked as a youth coach and assistant coach, did you find what suits you in scouting?

I see myself as an assistant coach or youth coach again at some point, and I recently extended my A coach’s license. But I really enjoy exploring. It has always been about staying in the football field and there is not a single position for me.

How do you see the task in the final round against Eintracht, who are looking forward to the Europa League final?

Of course you always want to win. But if you look at the calendar, you can see that we play Eintracht on May 14 and that the Europa League final is on May 18. As far as the line-up is concerned, Eintracht will likely focus more on May 18th. However, the game is so important to both camps that I think that the Eintracht team that plays for us will do everything to win the match.

You played in Frankfurt from August 2006 to December 2007, how do you view this station after almost 15 years?

Things were not going well at the time. For whatever reason, I couldn’t reach my full potential. But the topic is set, such situations happen again and again in football.
