€9 ticket, energy flat rate, tank discount: The 2022 relief package aims to bring a number of relief to the Germans. When will they come and who will they apply: an overview.
BREMEN – The Ukraine war has also turned Germany’s economy upside down. Inflation has risen to a record high, and the prices of some products in supermarkets seem to be on the verge of exploding. End? Not in sight. The additional financial burden also makes things difficult for consumers. So the federal government responded and announced measures to provide relief. Under the title of the 2022 relief package, a number of citizens are now waiting for the announced support from the government.
Relief package 2022: What action applies when – and to whom
Fuel Discount, Fixed Energy Price, Child Bonus, and much more: There are many actions in the menu. It has been clear since Wednesday (April 27) that they will come. The Cabinet’s traffic light government approved the €1 billion relief package. However, questions arise: to whom does what now apply? Especially when? We summarize what is known.
Relief package 2022: These measures have been announced by the federal government
Flat rate energy in the 2022 relief package: When will it come and to whom will it apply?
What was announced: Due to the Ukraine war and accompanying discussions about the purchase of oil and gas from Russia as well as the halting of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, energy prices also rose sharply. Therefore, the Traffic Lights Alliance has agreed to a flat rate energy rate or a flat rate energy rate of €300. However, there is also a payment setback: the amount of the energy price flat rate is taxable.
To whom this measure applies: All wage earners must receive money. So retirees are exempt from this – with one exception. If they have an average job with a monthly salary of 450-1300 euros, retirees can also benefit from energy allowance.
When the scale comes: The exact time is not specified. However, Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) announced at the beginning of April that it is likely that the fixed rate for energy prices will not be implemented until the beginning of June 2022. However, it may be some time before the money actually reaches people’s accounts. Entrepreneurs and experts assume that the payment of the fixed rate of the energy price will be made only with wage payments for the month of September.
Child reward in the 2022 relief package: How high and when should the reward come
What was announced: A measure that was hotly discussed even before the Ukraine war and once again gained momentum as part of the relief package is child reward. Also with regard to the high cost of living, families with many children or families receiving social assistance find themselves in a precarious situation. So the government announced that families would receive a one-time payment of €100 per child from the Family Benefits Office – in addition to the child benefit. The reward is matched by the child’s allowance.
To whom this measure applies: For all families with children. However, since the bonus is included in the child allowance, high-income earners benefit little or not from it. The situation is different for recipients of social assistance, as well as recipients of Hartz IV, who also receive the Corona Bonus which is also defined as a one-time payment, which is doubled (see paragraph “One-time assistance to recipients of social benefits”).
When the scale comes: It was already decided on March 25, 2022 that she would come. It was also clear since April 27, when the child bonus will be paid next: according to the cabinet decision of the traffic light government, families can count on the money in July 2022.
€9 ticket in the 2022 relief package: who can use it – and for how long?
What was announced: Are fuel prices exploding? Then take the train! This is exactly what the federal government wants to motivate citizens to do – and therefore it is launching a so-called €9 ticket. From June 1, the ticket will be €9 available for 90 days as a special discount for local public transport. It’s valid for one month for both listed public transport and regional transport – but not for long-distance transport. W: Always valid for the month in which it was purchased. If you buy in June, you can drive it in June. A new ticket is required in July. 27 euros for three months by public transport? Really cheap offer. Tickets are sold by local businesses: online, at ticket machines, in the DB app or at the carrier’s customer desk. In addition, the presale of the 9 euro ticket must start before June and some transport associations have already announced the presale of the 9 euro ticket in May.
To whom this measure applies: In short: for everyone. Of course, it is primarily there to temporarily relieve cost pressure on passengers. But some people may plan their summer trips based on the validity of tickets.
When the scale comes: Just in time for summer, the €9 ticket should start on June 1. Politicians said that everything would be done to bring this measure into practice, despite the difficulties noted. But due to funding uncertainty, federal states recently threatened to boycott the €9 ticket. By the way: According to information from the German Press Agency (dpa), a ticket for €9 can also be sold in advance in May.
The tank discount from the relief package 2022: When will it come and who will benefit from it
What was announced: Once again it’s about rising fuel prices, and once again the Traffic Light Coalition has considered a measure to relieve those affected: the tank discount. However, behind the cheerful concept of benefits, there is a fairly simple structure: the goal is to lower the energy tax on fuels such as gasoline or diesel. This is intended to push the price of petrol well below 2 euros per liter and the price of diesel down to around 2 euros per liter. To be more precise: Gasoline should be about 30 cents cheaper, and diesel about 14 cents a liter.
To whom this measure applies: In principle, of course, for all consumers. The fuel-powered wheelset is of course an advantage if you really want to feel the effects of the tank discount on your wallet.
When the scale comes: Soon after the outbreak of the Ukraine war, fuel prices skyrocketed. Therefore, frequent drivers hope for a quick implementation. However, the tank discount will come a long time. As a measure of the relief package, the tank discount will not be introduced until June 1, 2022 at the earliest. according to Globalism Finance Minister Lindner had already announced that the project could not be implemented with legal certainty earlier.
Hartz IV: A one-time payment for welfare recipients in the 2022 relief package: When will it come
What was announced: What was already clear: Because of the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic, Hartz IV recipients must receive a one-time payment. Originally there was 100 euros for it. After Cabinet deliberations on Wednesday (April 27), it is now clear that low-income earners will have more money to come. The one-time Corona payment for Hartz IV recipients will be doubled to €200. This money is intended to help alleviate a bit of the increased cost of living.
To whom this measure applies: Recipients of social benefits, such as unemployment benefit II (Hartz IV).
When the scale comes: Unlike other measures from the 2022 relief package, the planned start date of the one-time payment of the relief package was not initially known. But now it is clear: the additional Corona bonus will be paid to Hartz IV recipients, which doubled to €200, in July 2022.
Relief package 2022: Cabinet approves – what’s next?
The relief package measures were agreed upon in the Cabinet on 27 April. After that, the Bundestag and then the Bundesrat must agree. While consumers in Germany are already facing some changes in May 2022, it is likely that the States Chamber will deal with the nine-euro card on May 20 so it can apply on June 1. However, there is still a dispute regarding the financing of public transportation. Federal states are pushing for more money from the federal government, as well as the expected loss of income due to temporary reductions in ticket prices – in part due to higher energy prices for carriers.
People in Germany should already benefit from the relief package everywhere. However, this is not the case for all population groups. The wrong people in particular benefit from a flat rate of energy. Retirees also won’t get nearly anything from the 2022 relief package.
