In front of 58,453 spectators at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Sasa Kalajic gave the hosts a 1-0 lead (min. 13), before Anthony Modest equalized 1-1 (59) and Wataru Endo scored the decisive goal 2-1 (90. +2) .

Compared to the 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich, VFB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo changed his starting lineup to just one position. Orel Mangala replaced Omar Marmoush on the team.

FC coach Stephen Baumgart made two changes after the 1-0 defeat to Wolfsburg. In place of Benno Schmitz and Jan Tillmann, Kingsley Ihezibo and Dejan Ljubicic started.

There was an exciting atmosphere on the field from the start, but it was the fans who were to blame for it in the beginning, while the two teams were still looking forward to each other.

Then the Swabians got the upper hand and created opportunities. Thiago Thomas had a shot left in the six-yard area, but Marvin Schwepp was on standby and turned the ball over to the side (9′).

This is how 1. FC Köln started at VfB Stuttgart

A little later it became unruly. Luka Kilian Kalajdich was dragged into the penalty area, so referee Robert Schroeder awarded a penalty. The fouled man started himself, but Schwepp kept his goal clean with a superb defense by the foot. Stuttgart made the score better than the resulting corner and Kalajic converted a corner kick for Chris Furich with a header to make it 1-0 (13).

Now VfB had great self-confidence. In the 17th minute, it was Konstantinos Mavropanos who sent a long header from the right post from a cross from the left.

Stuttgart was better and the boom was under control. The only drawback, as in previous weeks, was the exploitation of opportunities. Captain Wataru Endo missed two big chances.

On the other hand, almost nothing came of Cologne. Modesti’s shot from the second row was easily saved by VFP goalkeeper Florian Muller (45). Then it became dangerous again: Stuttgart striker Thomas ran single-handedly towards the FC club’s goal, but was unsuccessful because of goalkeeper Schwepp, who raised his arms in time (45 + 3).

After a poor first half, Domstädter came out of the dressing room better and played straight forward. First, Florian Caines put the pill on the right side of the left half (47 minutes), before Mark Uth missed the goal with a shot from the near corner (48).

But VfB initially stayed awake. In the 53rd minute, a shot from Kalajic from 15 meters went to the left.

Then the shock came to Swabians: Stuttgart goalkeeper Florian Muller passed a cross from Keynes between his hands and called Modest, who scored the equalizer in Cologne (59).

The Swabians now needed some time to recover from the setback before they increased their stroke count again. However, there were no obvious chances until the substitute tried Marmoush from a distance. However, Cologne’s strong goalkeeper Schwebe cleared the ball over the goal (83).

Now it got really crazy: Stuttgart’s Endo headed the ball after a corner to save 2:1 (90 + 2). Thus, VfB took the class, while Cologne missed the European League.
