Berlin gets 100 new Barklets

from Healdberg Bronze

Great fighting over parking or sitting on the street! Traffic Senator Bettina Jarsh, 53, Greens, wants pedestrians and residents to stand on the side of the road.

There, the former car parks (up to three) each will be converted into a wooden box (maximum width 11.90 m) – the so-called barklets. Bad news for motorists: the search for a parking space will become more complicated and exhausting.

At least 100 new parks will be distributed across the city with a €200,000 programme!

On Monday evening, Garsch opened two new wooden chests in Straßmannstrasse and in Petersburger Platz (both Friedrichshain). The next round of applications will begin after the Berlin budget is passed in Parliament.

But so far only three regions have participated. They can apply, build and maintain initiatives, associations, and public institutions. 30 Kiez-Parklets have been built in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf by May, and there will be 65 by mid-year.

Some regions deliberately do not participate. “Spandau is on the verge of a traffic crash. In light of massive housing construction, we need more capacity on the street, not less,” says CDU council member Thorsten Schatz (39).

In Schatz’s view, it is becoming increasingly difficult to resolve the competition for space caused by the Senate: bus lanes, bike lanes, pedestrians, trams, cars, parking spaces …

Lichtenberg’s colleague Martin Schäfer (45, CDU) did not approve of two Barclayt applications – for security reasons. “The traffic flow was right next to it, and that was very subtle and very dangerous.” In principle, a city council member could imagine Barklets in green spaces or playgrounds.

“But why in the parking lot? The drivers here actually park at intersections because they are too pressured to park.”

Neukölln has not yet made any parking requests: “The application, road traffic regulations, etc. are resulting in many hours of much-needed work elsewhere,” says district spokesperson Christian Berg.

The united garden buildings were designed by two associations (Naturfreunde and Berlin 21). Then each initiative was supported with an average of €3,100. However, Barclays remains the property of the State of Berlin.

“Kiez-Parklets help tremendously, as they redesign the street space and increase the quality of life,” Senator Garsh says. “Where the parking lot was previously withheld, residents can now enjoy and stay in the green oases.”

And what about pedestrians? Every garden should be accessible and usable. In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, the approximately 558 seats in the stadiums and 1,500 in the greens, sidewalks and arenas have been increased by just two donated seats!
