Vacations without a Russian tourist – can travelers from Germany hope for deals?

Vacationers from Germany not only appreciate vacationing in Turkey because of the warm climate, clean beaches and delicious food. Travelers from Russia also loved to travel there. But due to Putin’s war in Ukraine and the associated airspace closure, far fewer of them are traveling to Turkey this summer than in previous years. This may mean that a number of beds are still empty there. Conversely, are Turkey holiday prices going down now?

“You might think so,” says Deniz Ugur, managing director and Turkey specialist at tour operator Pintours. But the calculation does not work so easily. “In fact it is like this: There are about 400 German-related hotels on the coast from Antalya to Izmir, and many of them are booked up to 100 percent by the German market.”

There’s also a real boom when it comes to trips to Turkey: Sometimes the demand is 35 to 50 percent higher than in 2019, last summer before the pandemic, says Ugur. And if demand for these homes remains stable, so will prices — unless they rise anyway due to higher energy and food prices.

FTI sees a “wider view” on the Riviera and the Aegean

Hikapi Ayhan, strategic destination officer at tour operator FTI, is changing the scope of accommodations in Turkey: “There are already hoteliers oriented towards German clients who previously turned only to Russian clients. In this regard, we see good chances that there will be a group More offers on the Riviera and the Aegean during the summer than it really is,” says Ayhan.

He says, “Bargains can be found in both the Aegean and the Riviera. The offer in both areas is so wide that there is a suitable offer for every type of holiday in every price range, families and couples in Fethiye will find offers suitable for the summer, says the tourism expert.

Turkey is popular for beach holidays with families and couples alike.

Securing a cheap trip to Turkey? This is what the experts recommend

However, both experts recommend not relying on last-minute shots when it comes to summer vacations. It is likely that hotel rates will decrease in areas that are traditionally popular with Russian guests, such as the areas around Kemer. But: “Flight prices are increasing every week, now they often make up a third of the price of travel. So whatever I can save on hotel costs, I go back to the flight at the end,” says Ugur. The reason for this is the high cost of kerosene and the increasing demand for flights to Turkey from the German market.

“If you want to travel to Turkey at a specific and special time, such as during school holidays, it is recommended that you book in time,” Ayhan says. However, if you prefer to travel spontaneously, you don’t have to worry about becoming empty-handed in the end.

“Even in the short-term sector, Turkey has shown in the past that good hotels can also be booked here at good prices. This will also be the case this year.” Ugur offers another tip for everyone who snags deals: If possible, book flexible cancellation terms with the flight. “If a particularly cheap offer turns out, travelers can still cancel for free with Pintors and then pay money for the flexible alternative only.”

Special travel destinations in Turkey

But what areas are particularly suitable for a trip to Turkey? The area around Antalya has always been a popular travel destination for tourists from Germany, but the Aegean is also increasingly popular. Travelers are pleased there with the less harsh heat of summer, and the “Meltemi” summer wind also provides the best conditions for windsurfing, explains Ugur.

Ayhan adds: With so many aqua park hotels with all-inclusive catering services, theme parks and dream beaches, the Turkish Riviera is a great vacation spot for everyone who wants excitement. On the other hand, if you want to take it easy, take a closer look at the city of Alaçatı on the Çeşme Peninsula, which remains an inside tip among German travelers: “The seaside town is especially popular with locals and offers romantic coves in the middle of the landscape. Picturesque mountain break is a very special one.”
