The future of work – a new work study

What is the new business?

new business term It refers to a concept that deals with the idea of ”new work” that includes current disruptions in the world of work and in the global social climate, such as digitalisation, epidemics, sustainability and demographic change. In plain language, this means: to reconsider the work and, above all, to rethink it. Randstad Deutschland GmbH recently published a study of the new work. It provides answers to the question of how work has changed, what it looks like or should look like in the future, and opens up opportunities to actively shape these changes.

Originally, term and idea New job It dates back to the philosopher Frithjof H. Bergmann (1930-2021). Bergman developed the new framework in the 1980s as a response to capitalism. In the meantime, the term has been removed from its former meaning and describes metrics, observations, and desires about how the professional world is changing.

after growth

Wanted by many, feared by many, and yet this is an irrefutable fact: the age of long, vaunted growth is over. This relates not only to social change, but also to the fact that continued growth is always linked to exploitation, either through the consumption of finite resources such as oil, minerals, or space, or through the inappropriate and unfair treatment of people and their labor force. The planet and the global community have long since reached their limits and it is becoming increasingly clear that things cannot continue this way.

Instead of insisting on more growth, the economy, businesses, and employees should prepare for the post-growth period, when capitalist ideas of career and success recede into the background. They are replaced by values that are no longer necessarily related to hard factors such as income levels and status codes, but are related to soft factors such as viability, creative freedom, and work-life compatibility.

economy meaning

Manufacturing, robotics development and artificial intelligence (AI) mean that a large number of boring, monotonous and repetitive tasks are performed by machines. This trend will continue, which is why fewer and fewer people will be employed in this type of work. This refocuses on skills such as creativity and empathy. Solving future tasks defines actions and creates a new sense of action. In the so-called economy of meaning, there is a changing understanding of progress, in which the best rather than the newest product is most valuable. But this concerns not only products, but also structures within the company.

Mixing work and life

The work-life balance is as good as it is outdated. Mixing work and life takes its place. The boundaries between work and private life are blurring, not least because flexible working is possible. The seamless transition between work and private life allows employees to interact flexibly with special circumstances, work independently and thus increase their productivity. This makes workers happier as work adapts to life and not the other way around. However, the concept of blending work and life also risks ignoring one’s boundaries and thus losing a sense of relaxation and structure.

Mixing work and life has always been a problem for the self-employed and some companies more willing to experiment, like Google, but it needs to be discovered and implemented individually for everyone.

flexible work

Flexibility is clearly central to the new way of working. This is closely related to the blending of work and life and also to digitization. Work should adapt to the conditions of everyday life and lifestyle, and not the other way around. This can take the form of somewhat more flexible working hours and can lead to digital nomadism or modern nomadism.

Working hours are no longer understood as a weekly continuum, but as a flexible unit that can be adapted to individual situations and life stages. Sometimes working full time 30 hours a week is more productive, reduces sick leave, and so is likely to become the new standard, as it is already being tested in some countries. This flexible distribution of working time is also incorporated into the hours of the day when you feel most productive.

The workplace will also be flexible. It doesn’t matter whether you advocate working from home, working off hours, a working holiday from a different time zone, or prefer social and organized daily work in the office, there are solutions for everything. Depending on the company and the activity, there will be more or less flexibility here.

Digitization And automation

Unfortunately, Germany has always been a bit behind when it comes to digitization. The past few years have changed that and the trend is going exactly in that direction. Digital work environment, video conferencing, digital tools for project and knowledge management have become standard within a very short period of time.

More and more companies are also relying on the use of artificial intelligence. Especially with monotonous activities, machines run longer and better – with the same quality. Digitization comes with automation and robotics at the same time. As a result, you will lose some jobs, but there is now more room for creative work. However, empathy, intuition, creativity and environmental awareness cannot be replaced by technology, which is why companies will create a work environment in which all of these things are encouraged.
