Sports in the garden in the neighborhood park of Wersten

Sports in the park in Dusseldorf
Doing sports in the neighborhood park

The training areas at Sport im Park in southern Düsseldorf range from the exercise park in Garath and the palace park in Benrath to the neighborhood park in Wersten. Everyone is welcome when training outdoors.

In front of the neighborhood park in Wersten on Friday morning, the first people interested in sports are. Some come on bikes, others push the strollers in front of them. Everyone is already wearing their gym clothes and has their training mats with them. Job training is on the program at 9:30 am. “We’re really looking forward to the rehearsals,” says a woman looking for a shady spot. This season at Sport im Park, coach Jurij Gappel-Urbschat of Team Strong and Shape coached the Werstener Sporttermin. Some music accompanies the exercises, and a sign has been put up stating that this is where the sports training takes place in the park. Nobody has to register, just pass by and share. Colorful group. I’m joking here and there.

In the beginning, the coach explains: “We do a bunch of different exercises that you will find similar in your daily life, with short breaks in between and joining in as best you can.” It offers alternatives for each exercise so everyone can stay the same. “As always, we start with a warm-up and packing, then there’s a mix of different muscle groups and finally we extend,” he explains.

In addition to training on Friday mornings in the neighborhood park on Burscheider Strasse 29, there is also a more intense version at the Unterbacher See, which he runs. It takes place on Fridays at 5.30pm in the sunbathing garden on the North Bank. But first, it’s time to sit on the carpet in the meadow in the neighborhood park among the flowers and trees: sit-ups and back exercises, to strengthen different parts of the body. Everyone engages at their own pace, with drink breaks in between. Small and big train here under a blue sky.

Sports in the park is an uncomplicated sports show for many. You do not have to register for this. “I’m glad I can visit here,” says one of the participants. “I was still thinking about it this morning, so I quickly packed my gym mats and got on my bike,” she says.

In addition to the morning appointment in Wersten, there are other shows on different days of the week in southern Düsseldorf. On Mondays, for example, training takes place at Hellerhof. At 7 pm, many sports fans will gather at Ernst-Lemmer-Straße for functional training. Job training is also on the agenda in Holthausen every Tuesday at 9:30 am. Then it will take place in Elbroich Park. Training takes place every Tuesday at 7pm (functional training) at the Orangery at Benrath Palace Park. Thursdays from 6 pm. Zumba is on the program at Garath Movement Park. On Saturdays at 10am it’s all about Qi Gong at the Orangery at Benrath Palace Park.

If you also want to train at other times, you can find other shows in other parts of the city on the Sport im Park schedule. It is recommended to train on recreational or sports equipment, beverages, sports mat or towel. Anyone who has been out of training for an extended period should consult their family doctor. In extreme weather conditions, shows may be canceled at short notice.
