Many combine the state holiday (Ascension Day) on Thursday with Bridging Day on Friday to create a long weekend. In some federal states, there is also a school-free Friday, and in Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt the one-week vacation ends.
Ascension Day: Traffic jams imminent on Wednesday
Car clubs are already assuming there will be plenty of congestion nationwide on Wednesday afternoon into the evening hours. This applies to roads around urban areas, on major roads to the south and to the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. On Thursday, also known as Father’s Day in some places, there should only be “moderate traffic” on major roads, according to ACE.

Friday is also more convenient for highway travel. According to the ADAC, there are currently more than 1,000 construction sites, but there is always a chance of losing time.
This also applies largely to Saturday, when the volume of travel is expected to increase again. Clubs expect another peak in terms of traffic jams during the return trip on the highways on Sunday afternoon. When the weather is nice, there are also many day hikers on the secondary roads.

Where traffic jams threaten in Austria and Switzerland
The traffic situation in Switzerland and Austria is likely to take a similar path to that in Germany. The Tauern, Fernpass, Brenner, Rheintal and Gotthard roads are at risk of congestion. According to ACE, traffic jams in front of the Gotthard Tunnel could already occur in the latter from Wednesday afternoon.
It also becomes narrow in access roads in recreation areas. ADAC in Austria cites the Carinthian and Salzkammergut lakes and Lake Neusiedl as examples. For Switzerland, the recreational areas of the cantons of Ticino and Valais are mentioned.
Anyone planning an alpine trail tour should be aware that some trails are currently still closed. The last permits will be issued in June. Random checks for cross-border traffic cannot be ruled out. However, due to the relaxation of entry regulations in many countries, things are progressing much faster than they were a few weeks ago, according to the ADAC.
