Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha): Smart team decision / MotoGP

MotoGP World Champion Fabio Quartararo spoke about the updates to his Yamaha M1 and the smart decision his team made after finishing second in the Mugello GP.

Fabio Quartararo led a solid race in Mugello. Frenchman Alex Espargaro overtook the VR46 hotspots in the early stages and then went on to chase Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati).

After the race, the technical improvements to the Yamaha M1 were also a problem. Regarding the much-anticipated aerodynamic update, Fabio said: “When you have something like this, you’d expect an improvement. The aerodynamic gave us a slightly more top speed, well, yeah. But it also has negative points.”

Fabio said: “We were smart enough to say with the team we were going to stick with the old part. Well, it gave us 1 km/h more speed. But we are losing more valuable time with the new panels in other parts.”

Quartararo then privately revealed the gift of the M1: “It’s a gift with less wings. We might try them again in Barcelona. But if that bothers you, we won’t use it there either.”

Quartaro said of eight-time world champion Marc Marquez’s health failure: “For me, Mark has been the best driver of the last 10 years. He’s had two very tough years. It’s very difficult for a driver with such problems to come back. He still wins three races. In 2021. No matter what happens to him next, I wish him all the best. I hope we can fight like we did in 2019.”
